Top Longest Bridge in India | Most Amazing Bridges in India

Hazarika Bridge

Last but not least, the longest bridge in India also referred to as the Dhola-Sadia bridge, was inaugurated on 26th May 2017.

The bridge is constructed on Lohit River which is a tributary of Brahmaputra river and connects Dhola in the south to Sadia in the north. Its total length is 9150 meters, and the bridge now occupies the top position in long spans. It is the first permanent road connection between northern Assam and Eastern Arunachal Pradesh.

With the rapid movement of India’s defense assets in mind, following the incursions by the Chinese Army, this bridge has been designed to handle the weight of 60-tonne tanks like the Indian Army’s Arjun tank.

Since days of the Sino-Indian War, China has disputed India’s claim to Arunachal Pradesh, politically and militarily right along the LOC. This makes the bridge a crucial tactical asset in the ongoing dispute.

Gandhi Setu

The bridge is located on the Ganges connecting Hajipur and Patna. The Gandhi Setu is the second-largest bridge in India. It is a 5750-meter long bridge. It was inaugurated in 1982 and was the longest bridge in India till 2017. The bridge connects the whole of Bihar.

Gandhi Sea link (Bandra–Worli Sea Link)

The Gandhi Sea link is also known as the Bandra Worli Sea Link. It is the third-longest bridge in India.

This bridge is a cable-stayed bridge and was commissioned in 2009. Eight lanes of the bridge were opened in 2010. It has a length of 5575 meters; the bridge connects western suburbs to the Mumbai Central business district.

The bridge was commissioned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and was built by the Hindustan Construction Company. The first four of the total eight lanes of the bridge were opened to the public on 30th June 2009.

Bogibeel Bridge

is in the northeastern state of Assam. It has a length of 4940 meters. It is the longest combined railroad bridge. It was inaugurated on the 25th of December, 2018 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Bogibeel Bridge has improved road connectivity between Assam’s Dibrugarh and Dhemaju district. In addition, the bridge has joined Lumding – Dibrugarh section and Rangia Murkongselek section.

On the 2nd of December 2018, the bridge opened as the first freight train crossed it. On 25th December, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bogibeel bridge, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The total cost of the project ultimately escalated to 5,960 crores (US$840 million). The full length of the bridge has also increased from 4.31 kilometers (2.68 mi) to 4.94 kilometers (3.07 mi).

Vikramshila Setu

It is 4700 meters long. The bridge is located near Bhagalpur (Bihar). The bridge is constructed on the Ganges and connects NH 80 and NH 31.

The bridge was named after the ancient Mahavira of Vikramshila which was established by King Dharmapala(783- 820 A.D). Moreover, it runs from Barari Ghat on the Bhagalpur side on the south bank of the Ganges to Naugachia on the north bank. It also connects Bhagalpur to Purnia and Katihar.

This has significantly reduced the road travel between Bhagalpur and places across the Ganges considerably.

However, there is intense traffic congestion on the bridge due to increased traffic, and there is now a demand to construct another bridge parallel to it.

In June 2018, another 24 km-long Vikramshila -Kataria rail-cum-road bridge between Vikramshila railway station (near Pirpainty south of Ganga) and Kataria railway station (near Naugachia railway station) north of the Ganga, with an expenditure of Rs 4,379.01 crore were approved.
